The Return (2024)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

After twenty years away, Odysseus washes up on the shores of Ithaca, haggard and unrecognizable. The king has finally returned home, but much has changed in his kingdom since he left to fight in the Trojan war.

The Quartile Take

A grounded retelling of the Odyssey's homecoming arc, The Return strips away epic fantasy in favor of a grittier, more intimate drama. The plot is structurally solid but constrained by its source material's familiarity, offering little reimagining beyond a realistic aesthetic. Acting is competent and earnest but uneven across the cast. Cinematography is atmospheric in places, evoking a sun-bleached Mediterranean world, though not especially distinctive. Novelty suffers because Odysseus adaptations are plentiful, and this entry doesn't reinvent the mythology enough to stand apart from prior screen treatments. The ending, faithful to the Homeric resolution, lands adequately but without the emotional or dramatic punch to elevate it.
