The Quartile Take

Serendipity is a pleasant but formulaic romantic comedy that leans heavily on contrivance — its central premise of fate and missed connections is charming but recycled from countless rom-coms before it. The plot relies on increasingly implausible coincidences that strain credibility, and the will-they-won't-they structure offers few surprises. John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale have genuine chemistry and elevate the material above its script, while the New York City winter backdrop is attractively shot but not cinematically distinctive. The ending delivers the expected feel-good resolution without any meaningful subversion. It's a competent, likable entry in the genre but not a standout in any particular dimension.
