Last Night of Amore (2023)

On the night before retirement, police lieutenant Amore is called to investigate the off-duty death of his longtime partner, who fell prey of an illegal scheme Amore himself was secretly part of.

The Quartile Take

Last Night of Amore is a tightly constructed Italian neo-noir that earns genuine praise for its plot mechanics — the moral trap closing around a retiring cop who discovers his complicity has fatal consequences is executed with real tension and craft. The ending delivers a bitter, morally complex payoff that lingers. Acting is solid throughout, anchored by Pierfrancesco Favino's restrained and convincing performance, though supporting work is more workmanlike. Cinematography captures Milan's nighttime urban landscape with atmospheric competence but rarely transcends genre convention. Novelty is decent — the film works confidently within the European crime thriller tradition with a distinctive Italian sensibility, though it draws on familiar noir tropes without radically reinventing them.
