Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating
When Champion City's hero Captain Amazing is kidnapped by the recently paroled supervillain Casanova Frankenstein, a trio of average, everyday superheroes -- Mr. Furious, the Shoveler and the Blue Raja -- assemble a new super team to save him.
Mystery Men is a genuinely distinctive superhero spoof with an offbeat ensemble and a singular deadpan commitment to its premise of mediocre heroes with mundane powers. The cast is quirky and game, delivering solid if uneven performances across a large ensemble. Visually it has a fun retro-camp aesthetic that suits its comic book origins. Where it stumbles is in the third act — the climax and resolution feel deflated and anticlimactic, failing to pay off the setup with adequate energy or wit. Novelty is the film's strongest suit: arriving before the superhero genre became a dominant force, it carved out a uniquely self-aware, absurdist niche that few films have replicated.
