The 21st successor to the role of Bengalla's resident superhero must travel to New York to prevent a rich madman from obtaining three magic skulls that would give him the secret to ultimate power.
The Phantom is a serviceable but unremarkable mid-90s superhero adventure. The plot follows a formulaic MacGuffin-chase structure with the three magic skulls offering little tension or originality. Acting is generally flat, with Billy Zane's earnest but campy lead performance being more nostalgic curiosity than compelling characterization. Cinematography has some appealing jungle and period-set visuals but nothing distinctive. Novelty is low — despite drawing from a classic comic strip hero, the film feels derivative of the Indiana Jones and pulp adventure template without adding a distinctive voice. The ending resolves predictably with little dramatic payoff.
