The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

A young soprano becomes the obsession of a disfigured and murderous musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House.

The Quartile Take

Joel Schumacher's adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's beloved stage musical is a visually sumptuous spectacle — the production design, costumes, and cinematography are genuinely exceptional, making the Paris Opera House feel lavishly grand and gothic. However, the film's weaknesses are well-documented: Gerard Butler's vocal limitations drag the acting and musical performances below the standard fans expect, and Emmy Rossum, while vocally stronger, lacks dramatic depth in her portrayal of Christine. The plot faithfully follows the stage musical but offers little cinematic reinvention — it's essentially a filmed stage show, which limits its novelty as a film. The ending is emotionally satisfying for fans of the source material but unremarkable in cinematic terms. Overall a visually impressive but creatively safe adaptation.
