When an explosion at an oil well threatens hundreds of lives, a crack team is called upon to make a deadly desert crossing with nitroglycerine in tow.
This Netflix remake of the 1953 French classic (itself based on Georges Arnaud's novel) is largely considered a pale imitation. The plot retains the tension-by-transport premise but strips away much of the psychological depth and existential dread that made the original so compelling. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with characters feeling thinly drawn. Cinematography has some decent desert and action sequences that benefit from a modern budget. Novelty is very low — it is a straightforward remake of a beloved classic, bringing little new perspective or distinctive voice, and the keywords confirm its derivative nature. The ending fails to land with the same devastating impact as the source material, feeling comparatively hollow.
