Ruthless Chicago newspaper editor Walter Burns resorts to dubious motives in order to get top reporter Hildy Johnson to cover one more big crime story before retirement.
Billy Wilder's adaptation of the classic Hecht-MacArthur play benefits enormously from a stellar cast led by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau at their sparring best, delivering rapid-fire comic timing that elevates the familiar material. The plot, however, is well-worn by 1974 — this was already the third major screen adaptation — making it feel more like a polished revival than a fresh cinematic statement. Cinematography is functional and stagy, reflecting the theatrical origins without much visual invention. The ending retains the play's cynical wit but lacks surprise for anyone familiar with the source. A crowd-pleasing but unremarkable entry in Wilder's late career.
