Ginger Snaps (2000)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

The story of two outcast sisters, Ginger and Brigitte, in the mindless suburban town of Bailey Downs. On the night of Ginger's first period, she is savagely attacked by a wild creature. Ginger's wounds miraculously heal but something is not quite right. Now Brigitte must save her sister and save herself.

The Quartile Take

Ginger Snaps is a genuinely distinctive entry in the werewolf/body horror genre, smartly using lycanthropy as an extended metaphor for female adolescence, puberty, and sexual awakening — executed with a sharp, darkly comic tone that feels singular. The plot is well-constructed and thematically coherent even if it follows genre beats. Acting from Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle is strong and carries real chemistry, though supporting performances are more uneven. Cinematography is competent suburban-Gothic without being especially inventive. The ending is emotionally resonant and appropriately bleak, though not fully surprising given the trajectory. Novelty is the standout — few films have fused feminist coming-of-age themes with werewolf horror so purposefully and with such a distinctive voice.
