El Conde (2023)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

After living for over two centuries, Augusto Pinochet is a vampire ready to die… but the vultures around him won't let him go without one last bite.

The Quartile Take

El Conde is a genuinely singular satirical fantasy that reimagines Augusto Pinochet as an immortal vampire, blending Chilean political horror with darkly absurdist comedy. Its black-and-white cinematography is stunning — lush, high-contrast Gothic imagery that elevates the material considerably. The plot is inventively constructed, skewering Pinochet's legacy and those who profited from it with savage wit. Novelty is exceptionally high: there is simply nothing quite like this film in conception or execution. Acting is solid throughout but rarely transcendent. The ending, while thematically fitting and tonally consistent, feels slightly rushed and doesn't fully capitalize on the buildup.
