Rodney Copperbottom is a young robot inventor who dreams of making the world a better place, until the evil Ratchet takes over Bigweld Industries. Now, Rodney's dreams – and those of his friends – are in danger of becoming obsolete.
Robots (2005) is a visually inventive animated film with a richly detailed steampunk-inspired mechanical world that Blue Sky Studios crafted with impressive imagination. The voice cast, including Ewan McGregor and Robin Williams, brings energy and charm to the characters. However, the plot is formulaic — a young dreamer overcomes corporate greed with the help of quirky friends — hitting every predictable beat without meaningful subversion. The ending resolves too neatly and conveniently, lacking emotional resonance. While the visual world-building and production design are genuinely distinctive and whimsical, the narrative scaffolding is too conventional to elevate the film beyond a competent, enjoyable but forgettable family feature.
