A law student's theory about the recent deaths of two Supreme Court justices embroils her in a far-reaching web of murder, corruption, and greed.
The Pelican Brief is a competent adaptation of John Grisham's legal thriller, with a solid conspiratorial premise involving Supreme Court assassinations and corporate corruption. Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington anchor the film with credible performances, though their chemistry is deliberately restrained. The cinematography is functional but unremarkable, typical of early-90s Hollywood thrillers with little visual distinction. The premise, while engaging, follows a fairly well-worn conspiracy-thriller template and doesn't break new ground — it's a by-the-numbers Grisham adaptation in a crowded genre. The resolution is satisfying enough but feels somewhat rushed and convenient, a common failing of the genre. Solid mainstream entertainment that doesn't aspire beyond its commercial thriller DNA.
