Frank Leone is nearing the end of his prison term for a relatively minor crime. Just before he is paroled, however, Warden Drumgoole takes charge. Drumgoole was assigned to a hell-hole prison after his administration was publicly humiliated by Leone, and has now arrived on the scene to ensure that Leone never sees the light of day.
Lock Up is a straightforward Stallone prison vehicle that hits familiar beats: wrongly persecuted protagonist, sadistic authority figure, camaraderie with fellow inmates, and an inevitable showdown. The plot is formulaic with little surprise, relying heavily on genre conventions of the late-80s action-drama. Stallone delivers a committed physical performance and Donald Sutherland makes a memorably cold villain, lifting the acting above average. Cinematography is functional and competent but unremarkable for the genre. Novelty is low — this is a by-the-numbers prison underdog story with no distinctive voice or craft to set it apart. The ending delivers satisfying closure in line with audience expectations, giving it a modest edge over average.
