Disgraced ex-England football captain, Danny 'Mean Machine' Meehan, is thrown in jail for assaulting two police officers. He keeps his head down and has the opportunity to forget everything and change the lives of the prisoners. When these prisoners have the chance to put one over the evil guards during a prison football match, Danny takes the lead.
Mean Machine is a competent but unremarkable British remake of The Longest Yard transplanted into a football (soccer) context. The plot follows a well-worn underdog sports formula with few surprises — a disgraced star, ragtag misfits, corrupt authority figures, and a climactic match. Vinnie Jones carries the lead with surprising charisma and the supporting cast (including Jason Statham) delivers solid comic energy, lifting the acting above average. Cinematography is functional at best, with nothing distinctive in the visual approach. Novelty is limited; beyond the football-for-American-football swap, the film treads entirely familiar ground as a remake of an established property. The ending delivers satisfying crowd-pleasing moments without subverting expectations, landing as a modest success within its modest ambitions.
