The Quartile Take

The Great Mouse Detective is a charming and underrated Disney gem that cleverly transplants the Sherlock Holmes mythology into a mouse-sized Victorian London. Its Novelty is genuinely high — the concept is executed with a distinct, witty voice, and the film feels singular in Disney's canon. The climax inside Big Ben is a landmark sequence for 1980s animation, blending early CGI gears with hand-drawn action in a thrillingly kinetic finale that earns a top Ending score. Ratigan is one of Disney's most delightfully theatrical villains, with Vincent Price's vocal performance elevating the Acting category. Plot and Cinematography are solid but not exceptional — the mystery structure is fairly straightforward and the visual style, while competent and atmospheric, doesn't reach the heights of Disney's greatest work.
